Nabio Greenhouse
Application Deadline: October 31, 2020
Develop and scale up a pilot redefining microfinance
Role Details

The NABIO greenhouse has been running a pilot since 2019, generating an income for 20 widows. Microfinance is great, but it only works when capital is the only barrier to succeed as an entrepreneur. Our model works like a microfinance project, but does not just grant capital - we provide a greenhouse, quality training by an agronomist, all equipment, insurance, and a buyer contract to sell 10 tonns tomatoes each year. We think the model can scale, but we need some businessminded students that can help tweak the model and think of how we can scale this up. Ideally someone with microfinance insight or strong connections to Kenya.

Nonprofit Consultancy Professional Services
Application Deadline: October 31, 2020
Seeking a team to found a new nonprofit consultancy startup
Role Details

It's management consulting (specifically within the strategy consulting space). The current team member have advised leading organisations and government departments to make better decisions by helping them make better use of data to inform their next steps. They have found that the services provided are very expensive. This makes them inaccessible for most of the organisations whose central aim in to make a positive difference in the world (e.g. some start-ups, social enterprises, NGOs, small-scale charities etc.) To change this, this project sets out to create a professional services' social enterprise to recycle all profits we make into providing pro-bono advice to selected organisations. To keep the lights on, cashflows would come from either (a) secure grants/funding from foundations, (b) take stakes in the organisations we advise in leu of money and/or (c) expand to other professional services (e.g. tax advice, audit, investing etc.). If it gets off the ground, we could also do internship partnerships etc. Get in touch if you are interested in the project, ideally looking for someone with a business/ consultancy background.

Medical Exchange Programme
Application Deadline: October 31, 2020
Creating an exchange-programme for University students to train and collaborate with a local healthclinic in Kenya
Role Details

We have a longstanding relationship with a healthclinic in a rural area of Kenya, and see the opportunity to create an exchange programme. The local clinic have expressed an interested in collaborating with students from abroad to advance their operations, get training, and do a shared outreach with local youth and volunteers.

We are seeking a team that are interested in setting this up. We have talked to medical students and professors at Oxford and Newcastle University and see that this could work as an alternative option to the current exchange programmes that usually takes place at larger institutions, more observations, and less impact.

Going to this clinic is an opportunity to learn from a much more demanding and informal environment, working closely with the local community and the doctor. The focus will be on bringing value that matters in the long-term for the clinic, sharing ideas and knowledge that stays even after the students leave.

We are looking for a small team interested in working with out contacts and the team in the UK to set up this exchange programme. Its a great opportunity to make a real programme and can entail trips and volunteering at the clinic for those who want it.

Spectrum Dating
Application Deadline: October 31, 2020
Make a dating app with neurodiversity at its core
Role Details

This project aims to develop a dating site tailored to meet all the needs for neurodivergent individuals keen on meeting someone. We would be looking for any student willing to devote efforts into developing a site, and we have a potential website designer that can put it all together once the team has made a plan. We're considering either making an app, but might also go with a consultancy approach where we personally match those that join in order to create the best matches.

For those on the autism spectrum, there's a 1 in 3 chance of ever going on a date. If you are lucky enough to get one, theres only a 9% chance you'll find a partner, fall in love, and get married. There's a bunch of apps and websites on the market, but none have truly solved the issue - they are prone to bots, and scammers, or fail to truly incorporate accessible designs and preferences tailored to their unique needs. This article does a good job at outlining the problem at hand: https://uxplanet.org/dating-apps-have-failed-autistic-users-but-that-can-change-2b8d4070f6c5
